It can be hard to get state-elected officials to focus on school issues, said Summit resident Jane Speer. She said one reason might be that although she lives in the Oconomowoc Area School District, neither of her state representatives represents that district.

 “Our voices are diluted,” she said. Speer and other community leaders in the suburbs hope to do something about the problem. 

In January 2020, Gov. Tony Evers signed an executive order✎ EditSign creating the People’s Maps Commission, a nonpartisan commission to redraw maps for consideration by the Legislature. Members may not be elected officials, public officials, lobbyists or political party officials.

Speer and other community leaders are encouraging people to provide input to the People’s Maps Commission and support this process
